Tonight, Liz and I went out to the final film in the Northwest Film Center’s rooftop screenings. They showed “Superargo and the Faceless Giants” from 1968. They had live music before the movie by a band called Will Carpenter ’s Towering Trees.

The film was an amazingly bad superhero movie from Italy. The hero (Superargo) is a retired professional wrestler that can fly and has psychic abilities. His spandex suit is bulletproof and he designs transforming cars on the back of napkins. He has a partner refered to as “the indian”, that can read peoples minds and levitate as well.

I was particularly impressed with how serious the film takes itself. Superargo is a total bad ass and doesn’t put up with guff from anyone. My favorite part is when the bad guy catches him and brings him to his hideout. He yells “PUT YOUR HEAD ON THAT BLOCK!” to Superargo so that he can behead him. But Superargo aint going out that way … no chance.

... the power of superargo ...

He just uses his mental powers on the henchman with the axe. One look from Superargo and he stops dead in his track. So the bad guy leader makes another guy try to behead Superargo. Ol’ Superargo looks him right in the eye and stops him cold too.

Sweeeeeet!

Like most ‘Mericans I had the day off today. Liz and I re-arranged the house and now I have my own studio room again. This will be good for “Bits”.

We also bought a $7 firework special at Freddy’s. It came with the smallest fountains I have ever seen. I took some pictures of our arsenal of heavy explosives.

... the real ones ...

We cruised on down to the Hawthorne Bridge to watch the real display and Liz and I snapped some pics of the big ones going off.

... POW! ...

I’ve always loved fireworks. When I was in sixth grade, my sister Auria and her friends Rafe and Jill cut apart a bunch of bottle rockets and dumped the gun powder on my desk. I put on my army helmet and lit off the pile. We also covered the door, my electric fan, and pretty much anything we could get our hands on with hairspray and lit it on fire.

My mom busted in on us and we ran outside with our ammo. We hid in the back yard and built one last bomb out of Roman Candles. We set it off just as my mom came crashing through the bushes after us.

I was grounded for six weeks.

... POP! ...

Another time, when I was 15, my best friend Dewey and I found some lantern fuel in the shed out back. We grabbed a couple of grosses of bottle rockets and headed over to the bridge spanning the gulley by my mom’s house.

We dumped all the bottle rockets in the middle of the bridge and doused them with lantern fuel. We poured a trail of lantern fuel from the pile of bottle rockets to about twenty feet away where we were standing (on purpose).

We flicked matches at the trail of fuel until eventually one set it off. As we ran for our lives, the bottle rockets whizzed past us exploding in fiery balls of lantern fuel enhanced goodness. That was one of the best 30 seconds of my life…

... BLAM! ...

… then there was the time my cousin Ian and I tied bottle rockets to one of my Star Wars action figures and sent him flying into the air. “Jetpack Johnson” we called him. I think I was about ten. His last flight sent him careening over the cliff near my mom’s driveway, setting the dry brush ablaze.
The flames grew and started to curl up and over the bridge.

Ian and I started freaking out. My mom wasn’t home. I started to link some hoses together from the yard to try and reach the fire and put it out. Ian, who was about 7, stood up on the edge of the bridge and started peeing on the fire.

... CRASH! ...

My neighbor, Tucson, drove by and asked us if we needed help. I didn’t want my mom to find out, so I told him we were just burning the trash.

After a while, I was able to put the fire out. The brush that had burned away revealed a vent for a gas line.

Gulp!!!!

{I in no way condone the inappropriate use of explosives as entertainment.}

... POP! ...

… tracking Kaboom! …

Some of you may have noticed that my website was gone for a while. I noticed too. It’s back now.

... trackin' the Bits ...

Today’s song was “Kaboom!”. I spent a large part of the day writing guitar parts. I used dual tracking for each take (good ol’ 57 on the Bitmo Modded Blackheart cab into a N72 preamp and a isolation cabinet into a C84 preamp).

Everything sounded great. Somehow my guitar sounded a little like a distorted fender Rhodes. There are a few tonal variations throughout out the song including one full out rock on zone, so I documented every setting for each link in the chain with my digital camera.

... the red tint is from covering the flash with my finger ...

I made it through just about half of the vocals for the song in about 3 and a half hours. Much of that time was spend arranging the harmonies.

I went out a shot some night time photography at about 10:30pm. These pictures were taken in the dark with between a 30 second and minute exposure.

It is my last week of school. I graduate on Saturday. I will have a BS in Physics.

My sister Auria is mad at me for not doing the funny ceremony/walk thing. I am doing my own ceremony … I’m getting in a car and driving away to go record my next album.

I had to take a break from Computational Physics and editing the “Combat” video to check in with the real world.

I eat vegetables. Liz has planted some life forms in our yard this year. I went outside the cave and peaked around at these little guys.

… Combat - final day of shooting …

Another long day of shooting. I think I have all the shots I need to finish the “Combat” video. Steve Watkins, the president of the Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club, came and helped out. Liz and my best friend Dave were there as well to lend a hand.

I shot some live action footage with my HV-20 and some time lapse and stop motion footage with CHDK modified my Canon A640. I think I grabbed over 40 different shots.

I’m hoping everything turns out. It’s very late and I can’t think much more about it.

… Combat stop motion - day 1 …

A loooooong day of shooting stop motion. Many things worked … some things didn’t (damn propellor!). I cruised through about 2000 frames today. Most of my scripts held up pretty well and I’m excited to see them play back at 24 fps when I get up tomorrow.

I just have to say thanks to David from the Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club - he was very helpful and helped me keep my sanity.

Liz showed up and ran the shutter release for me on a number of shots.

Here are some stills from the shoot:
