… editing Combat - day 1 …

I’ve captured and backed up all the footage from yesterday and started editing some of it. My initial guess was a 50/50 split between stop motion and live action footage. Now I’m thinking the video will have more stop motion.

I enjoy shooting single frame animation and I think there are plenty of things to shoot at the location. That means I am looking at shooting around 3000 frames of animation (I’m using 24 fps as my standard for animation).

I hope to go back to the Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club for a day and get this done.

In the mean time, I’ll have to figure out exactly what I’m shooting there …

… Combat shoot - day 1 …

I shot all day at the Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club for the “Combat” video. The video is half live action and half stop motion. Today was “live action” day. We used my Canon HV-20 HD camera, and some non-brand wide angle lens. My make-shift steadycam held up and didn’t fall to pieces and break Jonah’s (cameraman) feet.

We shot without a script and went almost entirely off of one page on my clipboard and some vague notions of storyboard in my head. All live action … It was fun.

Steve Watkins, the president of the C.G.M.R.C., was there all day and was very helpful. Also in attendance were: Gideon Klindt, Jeremy Bird and Liz …

A good day of shooting. Next, I need to go back and shoot the stop motion sequences!

I went out to the Columbia Model Railroad Club today to do some location scouting for the “Combat” music video. It was good to go back and realize the scope of the place. BIG. There is more than enough material to work with there.

I was shooting with my A640 at ISO 800 so the pictures are pretty grainy. I’ll be bringing all my lights out for this one…

I also sketched out a rough shooting schedule for the project. I hope to shoot the live action “bunker” portions in the catacomb like maze below the main floor. There is an unbelievable amount of electrical wire and great looking electrical panels with flashing lights that make for a great set.

I’m working up another CHDK camera script in mind called “Slippery Wobble” that slides from one random focal point to the next instead of jumping. Hmmmm…..

I hope to get everything shot within the next few weeks…

Carl August Johansen III

A year ago today I went to a memorial service for a good friend and relative of mine. His name was Carl Johansen.

He was a soft-spoken photographer and musician that spent most of his life in Pullman, Washington. When I was living in Moscow, Idaho he would venture over from Pullman (he didn’t have a car or license) to share his extensive photo albums with me.

I inherited some of his things … so I looked through some of his photographs and chose a few to share on the anniversary of his memorial.

[some photos by Carl Johansen - no Photoshop here]

He enjoyed taking pictures of his television. I had a “Twin Peaks” moment when I found two full rolls of film that he had shot of his TV while watching “Twin Peaks”. I think David Lynch would be proud.

Carl hoped to someday simultaneously watch “Alien” and “The Elephant Man” on two screens at the same time. I don’t know if he ever got the chance, but I promise I’ll try it at some point.

I will always admire his courage to continue on and be creative in the face of his personal struggles. It was harder for him than most people, and yet he managed to take literally thousands of pictures, write music and share it with his friends and family.

Here is the final instalment of Polaroid pictures I took while traveling in Spain with Liz in the year 2000.

It was my first trip abroad. I love Spain and want to go back.

Most of these are from our travels south, in a rental car. Granada, Narja and Tarifa.

Colored filters in front of the lens on a early 1980’s Polaroid camera.

A few of these were thrown into a microwave and cooked on high for about 5 seconds. (I do not endorse microwaving Polaroid film and in no way recommend that anyone do such a thing)

A few months after I met Liz - I went to visit her in Spain. It was my first trip overseas. I started in Barcelona, where Liz was living with her brother Chris and then we rented a car and drove all over Spain.

I took along a super 8 camera and a Polaroid camera. I used my colored filters with the Polaroid in the same way that I had been using them with previous works on super 8.

Someday, I’ll string together the super 8 footage I shot while I was there. Sadly, I left my color super 8 in Spain to be processed and picked up by a friend of Chris’s. I never heard from this person again. Somewhere — I have four rolls of film I’d very much like to see again.

Here are some of the pics…
