... Combat ...

Here are the lyrics to the song “Combat” from my forthcoming record “Bits”.

It is the first song on the record and arguably the most accessible. It is also the subject of the first video for the record. The video should be out by the end of the summer (2008).

Combat

last night I got word to turn the radio up and give my position
you hide and I’ll make sure that the only ones left are the mathematicians

communication ready to fall
this coded message with nothing to solve
deconstructing every weakness; tearing it out
they’ll build their shelters we’ll make the bombs
all together now

inside hides the controller
outmoded beliefs are getting older
that’s nice when everyone is aiming right at you
this whole disease … it isn’t over at all
we can make it if we run for cover
that’s hard to see if you never change your point of view

communication ready to fall
this coded message with nothing to solve
deconstructing every weakness tearing it out
you build your shelters they’ll make the bombs
all together now

stand by, hold your line, if it deteriorates you stick with the mission
next time we’ll switch sides and that’s the only defense against repetition

you pull the trigger, I’ll make the call
erase the map and relabel it all
when every person every nation is standing apart
they’ll build your shelters they’ll make the bombs
all together now

this battle with you has really broken my heart
a surrender refused
it never gets there
this battle with you has really opened my heart
my message confused
another thing to repair

… Breakaway … (lyrics)

... Breakaway ...

I got things rolling today by recording some acoustic guitar and vocals for the song “Breakaway”.

It’s kind of funny to be singing a song and creating it as you record. I’ve always written music in this way in form or another (four track demos and such). I like making decisions as I record, instead of planning everything out to meticulously before hand. It leaves me open to different possibilities.

This song is inspired by the Uncertainty Principle, duality and transcending impossible barriers.

Breakaway

Like a wave
Like a wave
Travels through the emptiness
Like a wave
In this way we all give up our places
Here
Breakdown
Breakout

Half awake
Half awake
Like the way we lived before
Half awake

In this way we all mean something
Hiding away
Don’t ever let them change you
Breakdown
Breakout
Breakthrough

Breakaway
Breakaway
Like a particle of light
Like a wave
In this way we all mean something
Hiding away
Don’t ever let them change you
Breakdown
Breakout
Breakthrough

Everybody wants to get this new world over with
Everyone except for you
Just pick it up and use what you started with
What are you afraid to do?
We’ll throw a party for the cruel and the ignorant
Everyone’s invited to
And when we’re ready for a total disarmament
What will there be left of you?

… Demons to Diamonds … (lyrics)

A good friend of mine has been listening to some rough cuts off of “Bits”. He likes the song “Demons to Diamonds” in particular and he keeps asking me about the lyrics.

... very confused about the graphics in this game ...

My whole process for “Bits” is so inverted that I’ll probably publish all the words before I finish recording them … then change everything and have to come back and re-edit them…

So here they are:

Demons to Diamonds

you’ve had your success
the laughter begins
and everyone’s thrilled
but let’s just say
they’re not all gone
they’ve all changed form
to something so undefinable

they’ve taken you in
you’ve offered consent
a trap that’s so isometric
there
a fractured edge
we might see in
discovering what control remains

... Snell's law of diffraction ...

an image reflected
the material objective
you’re safe if you don’t look hard
in the mirror there’s a little flaw
a demon with a big heart

cut shape this form again
and deliver it
do it if you want too
cut shape this form again
be a prisoner of beauty if you want to

and I wonder
what this will become

It may be the mathematical expression that he was curious about (I have it inverted in the version I gave him).
