… why I’m glad that I don’t have a tapeless HD video camera …

... miniDV saves the day ...

Yesterday, I remembered to get back to my music video for the song “Combat”. I set out to trim down the number of HD files in the project by eliminating the unused shots. In a classic move, I accidental deleted a shot from the film.

DOH!

I tried several un-delete programs in an effort to recover the file with no success.

I shot the live action footage with a Canon HV20 which records onto miniDV tapes. After a few minutes of rifling through my box of tapes, I was able to find the master tape and re-import the footage.

Modern camcorders are slowly becoming hard drive or solid state based, which lends itself to a “delete and reuse” mentality. Most people just don’t keep piles of hard drives or memory cards filled with pictures and footage on them. It gets confusing to keep track of folders and sub folders. It all hinges on your organization system. No more grandma’s shoebox filled with photos! Are people really ready for this? I am obviously NOT!

What does this mean for longevity of our recorded history … changing formats vs. time … having no tangible elements to put on a shelf? Or maybe people will keep albums filled with memory cards. Hmmm …

“Grandpa’s breaking out the CaseLogic again!!!!”

I’m just lucky I had a solid backup of the deleted shot.

Another digital lesson learned (almost the hard way).

Whew.
