{"id":61,"date":"2008-04-08T17:27:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-08T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/armanbohn.com\/blog\/?p=61"},"modified":"2008-11-02T13:25:38","modified_gmt":"2008-11-02T20:25:38","slug":"the-magic-toolbox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/armanbohn.com\/blog\/2008\/04\/08\/the-magic-toolbox\/","title":{"rendered":"The Magical Toolbox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the summer of 2002, I constructed a stereo effects unit inside a tool box.  <\/p>\n<p>I used:<\/p>\n<p>Two phase canceling spring reverb units (a total of four reverb tanks) from <a href=\"http:\/\/paia.com\/ProdArticles\/hotspuse.htm\">PAIA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two square wave fuzz boxes from Craig Anderton&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Electronic-Projects-Musicians-Craig-Anderton\/dp\/0825695023\">book<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two ring modulators (also from Anderton&#8217;s book).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.armanbohn.com\/blog\/pictures\/2008_04_08_c.jpg\" title=\"toolbox of the future ... plutonium not included\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.armanbohn.com\/blog\/pictures\/2008_04_08_b.jpg\" title=\"... what a mess ...\" \/><br \/>\nUnfortunatly, the fuzz boxes and ring modulators were of an old design that required a chip no longer in production.  I had to source a replacement chip and make note of the diferences in pinout.  Maybe there is a new version of the book that addresses this issue.<\/p>\n<p>My drilling skills are terrible so the interioir of the box looks out of whack &#8230; oh well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.armanbohn.com\/blog\/pictures\/2008_04_08_a.jpg\" title=\"inside the toolbox\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n<p>\nThe reverb is by far the most usefull effect.  Here it is on a drum loop:<\/p>\n[audio:Reverb.mp3]\n<p>The left and right channels both have two reverb tanks which are fed into the same amplifier.  The phase is flipped on one which helps reduce some of the &#8220;boingy&#8221; sound inherent in spring reverbs.<\/p>\n<p>\n<p>\nThe same drum loop with some stereo fuzz: WATCH YOUR SPEAKERS!<\/p>\n<p>[audio:Fuzz.mp3]<br \/>\nPretty basic, Russian sounding fuzz.<\/p>\n<p>\n<p>\nAgain with ring modulation:<br \/>\n[audio:Ring.mp3]<\/p>\n<p>Although the carrier signal is locked on the modulator, the frequency multiplier is adjustable allowing for a huge number of strange effects.
