… subtract …
Due to an unforeseen allergy attack, I did not record any vocals today. Instead, I began mixing my record. I started work on the song “Adventure” and I am going to try and stick to a new creed.
USE SUBTRACTIVE EQING
Ok .. so maybe I won’t do it alllll the time, but I’ve spent a good portion of my audio life adding frequencies with EQs to shape sounds. I’ve always wanted to train myself to carve out frequencies instead of building them up.
Now’s my chance.
I ended up getting most of the instrumental mix for the song locked in. The vocals are about 70% done. I started playing with them in the mix, and realized that I will need to automate some fader moves.
I also realized that my super-redundancy recording style has give me some flexability in the mix. I don’t have to use all 16 vocal tracks that I recorded. I had intended to do so, but now I can alternate different combinations and pick the best sounding configuration for some of the choral sections.
Lesson learned = SUBTRACT
